Uterine Cancer Treatment

Uterine/Endometrial Cancer Treatment
There are currently 4 uterine cancer treatments, also known as endometrial cancer treatments - since the endometrium is the name given to the lining of the uterus wall:

  • Surgical Uterine Cancer Treatments
  • Chemotherapy Uterine Cancer Treatments
  • Radiation Uterine Cancer Treatments
  • Hormone Therapy Uterine Cancer Treatments

Surgical Uterine Cancer Treatment
Surgical Uterine Cancer Treatments are the most common treatments used for endometrial cancer:

  • Simple Hysterectomy (Total or Complete)
  • Radical Hysterectomy
  • Pelvic & Paraaortic Lymph Node Dissection
  • Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy.

Simple Hysterectomy – usually involves removing the uterus and the cervix through an incision in the abdomen (Abdominal Hysterectomy). Removal through the vagina (Vaginal Hysterectomy) is also common, but the surgeon has more difficulty seeing how far the cancer has spread with this mode of access. A Laparoscopic Hysterectomy uses a Laparoscope (a flexible tube) to remove the uterus and cervix, usually through a small incision in the abdomen. With a ‘Total’ or‘Complete Hysterectomy’ the ovaries and fallopian tubes are also removed. An abdominal hysterectomy normally requires a hospital stay of 3-5 days, with complete recovery in 4-6 weeks. Vaginal or Laparoscopic procedures normally require 1-2 days in hospital with 2-3 weeks for total recovery. Complications are unusual, but could include bleeding, wound infection, and damage to the urinary or intestinal systems.

Radical Hysterectomy – involves removing the entire uterus, including the cervix, the tissues next to the uterus (parametrium and uterosacral ligaments), and the upper part (about 1 inch) of the vagina next to the cervix. The ovaries, fallopian tubes, and nearby lymph nodes may also be removed. This operation is done when endometrial cancer has spread to the cervix or parametrium. A hospital stay of about 7 days is usual and this surgery results in infertility. Again, complications are unusual, but could include bleeding, wound infection, and damage to the urinary or intestinal systems.

Pelvic & Paraaortic Lymph Node Dissection – involves removal of some lymph nodes from the pelvis and the area next to the aorta (the main artery carrying blood from the heart) to determine whether they contain cancer cells that spread from the endometrial tumor. This is usually achieved through the same abdominal incision used for the abdominal hysterectomy. In women who have had a vaginal hysterectomy, these lymph nodes may be removed by ‘Laparoscopic Lymph Node Sampling’.

Bilateral Salpingo-Oophorectomy - involves removing both ovaries and both fallopian tubes.
The surgeon usually removes all the cancer that can be seen during the operation, but some patients may be given Radiation therapy or Hormone treatment following surgery in order to make sure that any remaining cancer cells are destroyed, this is known as Adjuvant Therapy.

Chemotherapy Uterine Cancer Treatment
Chemotherapy Uterine Cancer Treatment uses drugs to prevent the cancer from growing, either by killing the cancer cells or by stopping them from dividing. ‘Local (or Regional) Chemotherapy’ is administered by injecting the drugs directly at the cancer site where they are able to directly affect the cancer cells without affecting normal cells in other parts of the body. ‘Systemic Chemotherapy’ is usually administered by taking a pill or by injection into the bloodstream and enables the drugs to reach all parts of the body. The preferred form of chemotherapy varies from case to case, depending on the ‘Type’ ansd ‘Stage’ of the cancer to be treated.

Side Effects Of Chemotherapy Uterine Cancer Treatment
Side effects of Chemotherapy uterine cancer treatment include: severe nausea, vomiting, and damage to the immune system, kidneys and liver. However, there now are ways to counter some of these effects. Traditional chemotherapy cancer treatments are prescribed generically based on the 'Stage' of the cancer.

ORT Inc. can now offer You a revolutionary new option. We enable your oncologist to tailor your chemotherapy to YOUR specific tumor characteristics, regardless of stage. The benefit of this approach, is that we are able to provide more effective treatment to YOUR specific tumor 'Type', minimizing side effects to You.

Radiation Uterine Cancer Treatment
Radiation Uterine Cancer Treatment uses the destructive effects of radiation to kill the cancer cells:

  • External Beam Radiotherapy aims a beam of high energy x-rays at the cancer cells.
  • Brachytherapy (‘Internal Radiotherapy’) - involves placement of radioactive pellets, or wires directly at the cancer site.

The preferred radiation treatment for uterine cancer also depends on the ‘Type’ and ‘Stage’ of the cancer.

Hormone Therapy Uterine Cancer Treatment
Hormone therapy can be used as a uterine cancer treatment because certain types of cancer cells are stimulated to grow in the presence of naturally occurring hormones like estrogen. When testing confirms that the cancer cells have hormone receptors, drugs, surgery, or radiation therapy can be used to reduce the production of hormones or block them from attaching to the cancer cells.

Experimental Uterine Cancer Treatments
Researchers are continuously seeking new uterine cancer treatments, aiming to increase increase the potency of the treatment while decreasing any side effects. The only way to prove these new treatments is to test them in patients with breast cancer. The women who choose to take part in such 'clinical trials' get the best possible medical care and also the chance to receive either a new treatment or the best known treatment. If you agree to take part in such a trial you can rest assured that the new treatment has been carefully tested to make sure it is safe.

You can only get these new treatments if you join a clinical trial. To find out more about these trials, talk to your doctor, contact the National Cancer Institute at www.nci.nih.gov or at 1-800-4-CANCER (1-800-422-6237), or you can contact ORT Inc. at 866-894-8887.

New Proven Uterine Cancer Treatment Option
ORT Inc. has developed a proven technology that allows your oncologist to tailor YOUR chemotherapy treatment to target YOUR specific tumor. This new approach identifies the drugs that YOUR specific tumor is resistant to, and enables your oncologist to provide YOU with a more effective treatment regimen while minimizing side effects.

Many studies agree that the earliest possible detection and diagnosis provides the cancer patient with the best possible outcome. The ORT Inc. technique achieves this, thereby minimizing occurrence of relapse, recurrence and / or metastasis (spreading of the cancer beyond the original site).

Furthermore, recent studies have indicated that patients respond more favorably when their treatment is based on detailed analytical results, rather than merely on the superficial determination of the cancer stage.
